ESTABLISHING MINI-LIBRARIES FOR RURAL CHILDREN

     
Children in rural areas lack of books.In order to help children to have more opportunities to get knowledge, SEDEC and the Centre for Promotion of Japan-Vietnam Relations (Tokyo) initiated a project which is aimed to establish mini-libraries in primary and lower secondary schools in rural areas.

The first mini-library is set up in the primary school in Vinh-Tuy commune, located in sub-urban of Hanoi. The population in Vinh-Tuy commune consists of 6400 people, among them almost 40% are children. Most of population Vinh-Tuy commune are farmers. They cultuvate vegetables and flowers. Vinh-Tuy primary school has 600 pupils in 12 classes. In 2001, about 2000 books have been purchased and provided to the school library. The mini-library is managed by children themselves under supervise of their teachers.

 
 
     

The further mini-libraries are planned to set up in some mountainous provinces located in far Northeast and Northwest of Vietnam. They will serve children of ethnic minorities.

In order to extend the scope of the project, all kinds of donation for project are invited and welcomed.
